Cannabinoids dissolve more effectively in fat than in honey alone, so this method first makes a small coconut-oil infusion, then blends it into honey with lecithin for a smoother, more even mixture.
What you’ll need.
- 3.5g decarboxylated cannabis flower or shake, coarsely broken up
- ¼ cup refined coconut oil
- 1 cup honey
- 1 teaspoon sunflower lecithin
- Fine-mesh strainer and cheesecloth
- Clean, dry airtight glass jar
Let’s make it.
Phase 1: Decarboxylation
Controlled oven heat activates the cannabis before infusion.
- 01
Preheat the oven to 240°F (115°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- 02
Break the cannabis into coarse, even pieces and spread it in a single layer. Do not grind it into powder.
- 03
Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, gently stirring once halfway through. Remove it when dry and lightly toasted, then cool completely.
Phase 2: Make the Infused Oil
The coconut oil carries the infusion and helps it blend into the honey.
- 01
Combine the cooled decarboxylated cannabis and coconut oil in a small saucepan or double boiler.
- 02
Warm over very low heat for 2 hours, keeping the mixture between 160°F and 180°F (70°C–80°C). Stir occasionally and never allow it to boil or smoke.
- 03
Set a cheesecloth-lined fine-mesh strainer over a clean bowl. Pour the warm oil through it, let it drain, and gently press the cloth. Discard the spent cannabis.
Phase 3: Blend the Honey
- 01
Place the honey in a clean bowl set over barely warm water. Warm it only until loose enough to stir; do not boil it.
- 02
Whisk the sunflower lecithin into the warm infused coconut oil until smooth.
- 03
Slowly whisk the oil mixture into the honey. Continue stirring for 3 to 5 minutes, until the mixture looks evenly combined.
- 04
Transfer to a clean, dry airtight jar and label it clearly as cannabis-infused. Stir before each measured use, as some separation may occur.
Formulation & Consistency Notes
Storage: Keep the sealed jar in the refrigerator for up to 1 month. Let it soften briefly and stir before using.
Kitchen Use: Add a measured amount to tea after it has cooled slightly, spread it on toast, or stir it into yogurt. Avoid baking or boiling the finished honey.
Potency: Homemade infusion strength varies widely. Start with a small measured amount and wait at least 2 hours before consuming more. Laboratory testing is recommended for dependable milligrams per serving.
Honey is not suitable for children under 12 months, infused or otherwise.
For adults 21+ only. Keep cannabis products clearly labeled, stored securely, and away from children and pets. Never drive impaired.
